The University of Anahuac awards the Anahuac Tourism 2011 Medal to Sunset World’s advisor to the Board of Directors for his efforts to propel Mexico’s tourism.

Riviera Maya, Q. Roo, Mexico – Sigfrido Paz Paredes, Sunset World’s advisor to the Board of Directors, received the University of Anahuac Tourism 2011 Medal for his professional career, recognizing his efforts to propel Mexico’s tourism activity.

The School of Tourism at the University of Anahuac, based in Huixquilucan, Mexico, gave the award to the current advisor to the Board of Directors for Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences. Paz Paredes served as undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism as well as director of Cancun by Infratur (now Fonatur).

The director of the School of Tourism Francisco Madrid stressed the path Paz Paredes took to promote Cancun, which today has become one of the most successful tourism developments in Mexico and the Caribbean. Madrid added that the 2011 Anahuac Tourism Medal recognizes the personal career of Paz Paredes, who throughout his life has worked tirelessly in tourism, actions that have had an important social and economic impact in local communities.

Among those present were former Secretary of Tourism Silvia Hernandez, President of Travel Ghent Carlos Castellanos, former President of the Mexican Association of Travel Agents Mario Haza, and sub secretary of Planning Department at the Tourism Ministry in Mexico.

Hacienda Tres Ríos celebrates World Wetlands Day in Cancun

To celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, the ecotourism resort, Hacienda Tres Ríos, donated over 90 percent of the mangroves needed to bring Cancun’s dazzling Nichupte Lagoon back to life.

This exclusive resort’s plant nursery, located in Tres Ríos Nature Park, has produced and planted more than 80,000 mangroves in four years.

Cancun, Q. Roo, Mexico – The eco-friendly resort, Hacienda Tres Ríos, donated 3,000 red mangrove trees to Nichupte Lagoon’s reforestation efforts that will begin today in celebration of World Wetlands Day.

The resort actively participated in the commemoration of this important day by providing over 90 percent of the red mangroves to be planted on this special occasion in this area of protected flora and fauna.

The ecotourism resort of Hacienda Tres Ríos and its nature park are recognized as a model for sustainable tourism development both regionally and nationally by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).

The director of sustainable development for Tres Ríos Group, Gabriel Santoyo, stated that the donated mangroves were approximately one year old and were produced in the nursery of Tres Ríos Nature Park as part of the reforestation program authorized by SEMARNAT.

Mr. Santoyo explained that seven people from the nursery will serve as technical guides to nearly 60 volunteers who will participate in this reforestation program organized by the Environmental Education and Diffusion Committee of the Benito Juarez municipal district in Cancun. This committee was formed with the cooperation of the Municipal Department of Ecology, University of the Caribbean, SEMARNAT, Amigos de Sian Ka’an, and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), among other public and private entities.
