Development at Tres Ríos follows a careful planning and management process to ensure environmental integrity for each project from start to finish.
Tres Ríos has a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technical personnel who are currently implementing more than 250 specific strategies as part of seven programs and twenty subprograms under our Environmental Management System (EMS).
The Tres Ríos Environmental Management and Supervision team includes renowned specialists in the following areas: - Environmental Impact Assessment
- Environmental Management
- Sustainable Tourism Architecture
- Sustainable Tourism Development
- Geographical Information Systems
- Geo-hydrology
- Mangrove Ecology
- Coastline Geo-morphology
- Coastal Plant Ecology
- Vertebrate Ecology
- Mammal Management and Conservation
- Biodiversity of Coastal Wetland Ecology
- Reef and Marine Ecology
Through quarterly and annual reports, Tres Ríos informs SEMARNAT (the Mexican Environmental Ministry) and PROFEPA (the Federal Environmental Enforcement Agency) about the project’s progress. Strict compliance with all environmental regulations is overseen by periodic PROFEPA inspections.
The EMS System performs day-to-day on-site monitoring by the resident biologist and the environmental supervision team. These experts use georeferenced digital aerial imagery and our state-of-the-art Geographical Information System to monitor the environmental quality of the Tres Ríos’ ecosystems and natural resources. These ongoing procedures identify potentially unforeseen environmental impacts in time to design and implement appropriate corrective measures.
As part of the monitoring process, during construction the EMS team oversees that all these phases are carried out in an environmentally responsible way. Besides advising and working with the construction crews on a daily basis, the EMS team conducts weekly meetings with the contractors to plan, review, and carry out a fully coordinated schedule of construction that will make only minimal or no environmental impact.
Before construction is even allowed to begin, the EMS team marks out all areas where infrastructure is to be sited, then implements a Flora Management Program and a Fauna Management Program. These rescue programs are designed to relocate protected and endangered species.
For example, before construction began at the Hacienda Tres Ríos Hotel (scheduled to open in the summer of 2008), the Flora and Fauna Programs arranged to move all the animals originally located at the future construction site to the property’s conservation areas.
In addition, more than 1,200 individual legally protected and endangered plant species like those shown below were rescued and temporarily moved to the plant nursery. Later they will be replanted in the Hacienda’s gardens and natural conservation areas.
Endangered species rescued during construction The Environmental Education Program will continue to conduct regularly scheduled environmental workshops to promote the environmental awareness of our construction personnel. Our aim is to encourage better, more environmentally responsible decision-making.
In 2006–2007 these environmental workshops will include: - The Flora of Tres Ríos
- The Fauna of Tres Ríos
- Environmental Regulations Applicable to Tres Ríos
- The Tres Ríos Ecosystems
